When spending most of your time at home, it’s important to have a varied and balanced diet. But if you’re convinced that dried pasta, crisps and fizzy drinks are the only items that keep well outside a fridge, think again.

Many fruits, vegetables, meat, fish and even dairy products can last for months or years in your pantry. Here are 5 to add to your next big food shop.

Ghee

Ghee is butter that’s been stripped of non-fat solids. As it mainly contains saturated fats, it can be stored at room temperature for many months (as long as it’s well-sealed).

Hard cheese coated in wax

When coated in a protective waxy layer, some hard cheeses can last for years in a cool pantry before spoiling. But this doesn’t apply to all cheeses, so check the label for storage instructions.

Canned meat or fish

The process of canning a piece of meat or fish can extend its shelf life by 2 to 5 years without refrigeration.

Canned fruit and vegetables

Fruit and vegetables that have been canned or bottled in sweet or acidic liquids (like sugar syrup or vinegar) can last many years.

Jerky

If you’re not a fan of canned meat, try jerky. It’s made by drying or dehydrating any meat. If you keep it stored in an airtight container, jerky can last for a year or more.
